Bistro Squirrel

A tea towel covering a basket of rolls wasn't enough to foil this opportunistic squirrel while I went indoors to get the rest of lunch, but I was happy to trade a bit of bread for his modeling fee, not to mention an afternoon of entertainment. Two versions of this print are available.

DOUGLAS SQUIRREL
The Douglas squirrel or pine squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasii) is native to conifer forests in the Pacific coast of North America from northern California to southern British Columbia. It has only one mate per season and usually 4-6 babies in spring. The young leave the nest from late July to early August, but stay near their mother as a family group until the end of the year. Douglas squirrels are territorial, aggressive, and scrappy, but also highly curious with little fear of humans.

BISTRO SQUIRREL
My little subject decided I was no threat whatsoever and became my companion for a season. He ate from my hand, and clamberd all over me as I walked around my yard and even indoors. He brazenly made himself at home, darting indoors if I left a window open, heading straight for the bowl of peanuts I kept on the kitchen counter. The rest of his kin weren't afraid of me, but never got quite so comfortable as he did.
